About

This project was handed to me with one word: Process. I had to make something out of the word process. And what other process would come to my Latina-American mind but dance. I then had to make something out of the process of dance. So the next question followed: How do I teach people how to dance?

The Challenge

Create an experience where users can interactively learn a skill whilst being entertained.

Process

Focusing on dance as a form of release, I began to research when dance first started being taught and the culture that followed. I looked into Rudolph Laban's dance notation system—helping me understand aspects in dance that needed to be taught to my dancers (my audience). With this in mind, I began exploring the incorporation of screen stills from popular American movies that had memorable dance scenes in which my users could relate to—a pop culture form of notation.

The arrangement of my information was first mounted onto a wall for viewers to read and learn. I later moved my infograph from the wall to the floor after being inspired by the piano scene at FAO Schwartz in the Tom Hanks' movie Big.

Adding my personal Latino touch, I designed an interactive dance board teaching users how to dance salsa weaving old practices, pop culture, and other visuals guiding users how to loosely—and rather goofily—approach this learning platform.
